So, if you have been reading for a little while, you know that we embarked on an exciting adventure in straw bale gardening. (If you want to catch up, read part one and part two.) Going into this, we figured that if we grew anything, it would be exciting. Neither of us has ever gardened and honestly, I can’t even keep flowers alive. So imagine my surprise when we visited the bales last weekend and things were actually growing!

This is what our deck looked like before we transplanted the plants in the containers with the arrows pointing to them. (The white container had a squash plant and the green one had strawberries that were starting to run rampant!) And yes, we have so many marigolds. These aren’t even all of our marigolds. Andrew bought 12 marigold plants from the boy next door.

Here are the three bales where we transplanted the strawberries and squash. Fingers crossed they keep sprouting up like crazy!

As always, Mac came along. I think it is really important that children understand where their food comes from. Gardening is a great way to start that understanding early.

If you are interested in straw bale gardening, I can’t recommend the book Straw Bale Gardens Complete by Joel Karsten any higher. We have gotten 98% of our information from this book and it is so easy to understand!

See all of that green growing crazily out the top with the big leaves? Those are pumpkins. So if you come over next fall, be prepared for pumpkin soup with a side of roasted pumpkin and pumpkin pie for dessert. For real though, I am crazy excited for these pumpkins.

One more win this week is our tomatoes! Look at those beauties! Now I’m not counting my chickens before they ripen, but I am hoping for enough tomatoes to make at least a small batch of Andrew’s grandma’s tomato sauce. Delicious!

If you are interested in straw bale gardening, make sure you check out the Straw Bale Gardens Complete book. It is so helpful and informative.

How are your gardens growing? Any better than mine?
